Volunteers play an essential part in helping us meet our mission, both inside the shelters and at our community events. There are many things that a volunteer can do, including:
The following assignments may be available for volunteers:
- Foster an animal
- Cat and Critter Caregiver
- Dog Caregiver
- Adoption Counselor Assistant
- Adoption Event Assistant / Animal Handler
- Special Event Assistant
- Digital Photographer
- Office Assistant
- Feral Cat Clinic Assistant (held monthly)
- Clinic Assistant (should have a med/vet background)
To volunteer at the Pennsylvania SPCA headquarters in Philadelphia (350 E. Erie Avenue):
- Start by submitting a new volunteer application.
- Once your application is accepted, you will receive an email about upcoming orientation dates, usually Sundays from 10:00 AM until approximately noon. You will learn about cats and how they communicate as well as dog handling. You will have an opportunity to walk a shelter dog, so please wear long pants and comfortable shoes with closed toes.
- T-shirts are available for $10 at orientation; soon we will offer volunteer T-shirts online. After orientation, we will have a volunteer badge and lanyard available for you – please be sure to wear these every time you volunteer.
- Please keep in mind that volunteers should be at least 16 years old and able to commit to approximately eight hours a month of time.
- Community service requirements will only be honored through office work.
Contact the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@pspca.org to find out more about volunteering at the Philadelphia branch. To volunteer at other PSPCA branches, contact Chad Weaver at (570) 278-1228.
Here are some other ways to help the Pennsylvania SPCA help animals:
- Raise money for all of our sheltered animals – plan a fund-raising event with these easy tips: Event in a Box
- Organize a toy and treat collection in your community, school or church. Our animals love to play with fun toys and enjoy tasty treats - who doesn't?
- Collect old linens and towels for our sick and elderly animals. The extra softness is nice to snuggle in and really eases their recovery.
