RIP GEORGE_fb_use_newWe rely entirely on the generosity of our donors to fund our work to fight cruelty. Dedicating nearly half of our annual budget to rescuing and rehabilitating animals, we do not receive any state, local, or federal government funding for our life-saving work.

The George Bengal Fund to End Animal Cruelty was established to honor George Bengal, PSPCA Director of Humane Law Enforcement. It was George’s wish that his legacy of service to animal welfare continue after he’s gone.

Funds raised through The George Bengal Fund to End Animal Cruelty are dedicated to the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement operations. Sworn by the state of Pennsylvania, PSPCA Humane Law Enforcement officers are the boots on the ground, removing animals from abusive situations.

Every day, George’s team will continue to relentlessly work to remove animals from cruelty and neglect, prosecute the culprits and rehabilitate the animals so they can regain their physical and emotional health before finding their forever homes.

GEORGE & HIS TEAM RESCUED MAVERICK

maverick for websiteMaverick was rescued from a dogfighting ring in South Philly. Nearly 100 people had paid $100 each to watch a series of dog fights including Maverick’s. His fight was the main event with a $100,000 purse attached to it. Our Humane Law Enforcement officers broke up the crime ring in the middle of Maverick’s fight, rescuing him and 40 other dogs. While Maverick received crucial treatment in our shelter hospital until his scars and wounds healed, we successfully convicted the owner and 25 others attached to the fighting ring. All 40 dogs, including Maverick, were rescued and ultimately adopted.

In the last three years, our Humane Law Enforcement officers conducted nearly 25,000 investigations and saved over 4,000 animals. Depending on their condition and legal status, the animals we rescue stay with us for months, sometimes years. Led by our staff attorney and in partnership with local attorneys, we achieve a 90 percent conviction rate. Our medical team treats and rehabilitates the animals rescued from cruelty and neglect and places them in safe forever homes.

Fighting cruelty is expensive. We dedicate nearly half of our $9 million annual budget to rescuing and rehabilitating animals from cruelty. We do not receive any state, local or federal government funding for our life-saving work, we rely entirely on the generosity of private donations and grants.

At a time when most other animal welfare organizations have quit this costly and difficult work, we have reaffirmed our commitment to this vital part of the mission.

With a 97 percent live release rate and a no-kill philosophy, the PSPCA never puts an animal down for space or time.
