Urgent Rescue In Progress: A dozen horses saved from deadly fire

This morning, the PSPCA's Animal Law Enforcement team responded to a devastating and tragic fire at a property in Southwest Philadelphia, rescuing several horses after the makeshift stables they had been housed in burned to the ground.

As reports flooded in that flames were erupting from the 5800 block of Lindbergh Boulevard, our officers were quick to respond.

Several animals were living at the property in unsuitable shelters, including a horse, a goat, and a pig. Heartbreakingly, two of the horses didn’t survive. But, the 12 that did are now in our care.

The pig and goat are being cared for at ACCT Philly.

The three most critical horses were transported to the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for immediate treatment, while three more headed directly to our Philadelphia headquarters. Of the remaining horses, four will be temporarily housed at Montgomery County SPCA's Perkiomenville Shelter and two at Last Chance Ranch's Quakertown facility, before ultimately moving to our Danville Center.

As the horses begin to heal, our Animal Law Enforcement team will be conducting an investigation, including collecting forensic evidence of the rescued horses, to determine if cruelty or neglect was at play. Anyone who may have ownership of the horses in question or knows who may own them is urged to call our cruelty hotline at 866-601-7722 or email cruelty@pspca.org.

The trauma these animals have endured is unimaginable, and their road to recovery will be long and difficult. They will need urgent medical care, shelter, and support, and we need your help to provide just that.
