Thank you for considering adoption while you are looking to add a new member to your family. Our Philadelphia Adoption Center is open 365 days a year to make your dreams of a new family member a reality!
Why should I adopt a pet? When you adopt, you are saving the life of an animal! Each year tens of thousands of animals enter Pennsylvania’s animal shelters. By choosing to adopt you are saving a homeless animal who desperately needs a second chance at a loving home.
As an added benefit, a Pennsylvania SPCA adoptive parent receives a ShelterCare Gift health insurance policy if you provide your email at the time of adoption or call ShelterCare within 24 hours of completing the adoption. The ShelterCare Gift provides accident and illness protection for 30 days starting on the date of your adoption. After the 30 days, you can continue your insurance policy through the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Pet Insurance at http://www.pspcainsurance.com. Your Pennsylvania SPCA insurance policy gives back to the shelter, helping us save even more lives long after your adoption takes place.
How do I adopt a pet? Our staff and volunteer counselors are available to help you find the perfect furry family member for your lifestyle. In order to complete your adoption be prepared by bringing at least one form of identification which includes your name and current address. We encourage you to bring the whole family, including the kids, so everyone has an opportunity to visit all of our furry residents.
How much does it cost?
The Pennsylvania SPCA runs special adoption promotions with reduced pricing on select animals each and every day. The Pennsylvania SPCA regular adoption prices are:
- Kittens – $75;
- Cats over 6 months – $40;
- Good Samaritan Cats – $125;
- Dogs over 6 months – $50;
- Puppies and Good Samaritan Dogs $300.
What are Good Samaritians you ask? These are easier placed animals with a higher adoption fee, and this extra fee helps suport the other animals in the shelter who take longer to find a permanent home or who are on hold for Humane Law Enforcement. Each animal in our care cost anywhere from $250-$350. These animals are typically small dogs and pure breed animals.
We accept cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, checks (with ID) and debit cards. All adoptions include spay or neuter surgery, microchip, ID tag, and vaccines (Some animals may require further sets of vaccines at adopter’s expense. Speak with your veterinarian about your pet’s appropriate vaccination schedule).
All Philadelphia residents must purchase a City dog license when adopting from the PSPCA.
