Where Did You Find the Pet?
Once you’ve completed your report, the next steps depend on the community where the pet was found.
The Pennsylvania SPCA is not the municipal animal control agency for Philadelphia, but we work closely with our partner, The Animal Control Team of Philadelphia (ACCT Philly). After you complete your report:
- Contact ACCT Philly for the next steps; their hours and location can be found here.
- See “Just Found Them?” below — we may be able to take the animal in directly, based on space.
Animal control services are managed by municipal township or borough authorities; however, some animals may be transferred to The Pennsylvania SPCA’s Main Line Animal Rescue. After you complete your report:

How to Help Reunite Them

Scan for a Microchip
A microchip can reunite a pet with their owner in minutes. Visit any PSPCA location for a free scan during adoption hours — no appointment needed. Most veterinary clinics will also scan the found pet for free.

Spread the Word
Post photos in the general are where the pet was found on social media and other available platforms to alert your community. Someone nearby may recognize them — pets are often found closer to home than you'd think.

Return with Care
Thank you for being a good citizen and trying to do right by this animal. If someone comes forward to claim the pet, ask for proof of ownership before releasing them — photos, vet records, or adoption paperwork all work. Your extra step protects the animal and gives everyone peace of mind.
