How It Works

At the Pennsylvania SPCA, we make adoption simple and joyful. Every animal in our care has been medically evaluated and behaviorally assessed and is ready to become part of your family.

Step 1: Meet Our Animals

Browse our adoptable animals online, or walk right in to one of our four locations across Pennsylvania.
Step 2: Complete Our Application

Our application helps us get to know you so we can make the best possible match. You can complete it online before you arrive or in person, but note that it does not hold an animal for you.
Step 3: Visit Us

All locations are walk-in, no appointment needed. Many animals are available for same-day adoption! Be sure to review our pre-adoption checklist so you're ready when you visit. Check location hours below.
Step 4: Meet with Our Adoption Counselors

Our counselors are trained to find the right fit for your family. They'll take the time to understand your lifestyle, home, and activity level - and since a good match includes everyone in the home, be sure your household (and any current dogs) join you for this step.
Step 5: Bring Home Your New Pet

Animals that are already spayed or neutered can go home the same day. If your new pet is still awaiting surgery, they'll stay with us until their procedure is complete and we'll schedule a pickup time that works for you.

What to Bring

To complete your adoption, you must bring the following:

For all adoptions:

Photo identification We ask for photo ID and proof of address so we can stay connected with our animals after adoption and be there if you ever need support — it's one of the ways we go above and beyond for the animals in our care.
Proof of address if different from ID
Payment for adoption fee

For dog adoptions, you must also bring:

All dogs currently living in your home (for a meet and greet)
Proof of up-to-date vaccinations for your current dogs We require current rabies and distemper
All members of the household who currently live there must be present.
- Note: This includes children, as it’s important for them to meet the pet too.
